A Big Life

One thing people feel they have free rein to constantly comment on, is what language I speak in my home and to my partner. The most common refrain is, ‘You are in Germany, you should speak German to each other’ and other variations on the theme. Frankly, I tend to feel telling me what language to speak to my partner is like me telling you how often you should be having sex with yours. It isn’t any of my business and it is entirely up to you two. But that is by the by. This isn’t about what pisses me off, but instead about a little theory I have regarding bilingual relationships.

Obviously, I speak English. I came to Germany with three words of German (and one of them was ‘hallo’ under my belt) and have spent the past eighteen months simultaneously teaching English, writing in English and learning a…

How Many Civil Liberties Can We Afford To Give Up?

EFF Condemns CISPA, Vows to Take Fight to the Senate

“As the Senate takes up the issue of cybersecurity in the coming weeks, civil liberties will be a central issue. We must do everything within our power to safeguard the privacy rights of individual Internet users and ensure that Congress does not sacrifice those rights in a rush to pass vaguely-worded cybersecurity bills,” said Lee Tien, EFF Senior Staff Attorney.

Sign The Petition To Save The Bees!

Save the Bees!

Quietly, globally, billions of bees are dying, threatening our crops and food. But if Bayer stops selling one group of pesticides, we could save bees from extinction.

Four European countries have begun banning these poisons, and some bee populations are already recovering. But Bayer, the largest producer of neonicotinoids, has lobbied hard to keep them on the market. Now, massive global pressure from Avaaz and others has forced them to consider the facts, and in 24 hours, Bayer shareholders will vote on a motion that could stop these toxic chemicals. Let’s all act now and shame the shareholders to stop killing bees.

The pressure is working, and this is our best chance to save the bees. Sign the urgent petition and send this to everyone — let’s reach half a million signers and deliver it directly to shareholders tomorrow in Germany!

Side By Side Comparison Canon 5D Mark II/MarkIII/D800

A very good side by side comparison of the Canon 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III and D800 cameras. The comparison demonstrates their contrasting quality in the same ambient lighting conditions for ISO 500-25,600.

In case ISO 500-25,600 means nothing at all to you (like to me it’s all Greek), then you can follow this link to find the ISO speed and exposure index on Wikipedia. (Yay, Wikipedia!)

Talking to Yourself May Actually Be A Good Idea

I agree. I talk to myself all the time! It’s the only way I can have an intelligent conversation!

Let’s all stop judging people who talk to themselves. New research says that those who can’t seem to keep their inner monologues in — raving bus station denizens, for the most part, excluded — are actually more likely to stay on task, remain focused better and show improved perception capabilities. Not bad, really, for some extra jabbering.

According to a series of experiments written up in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology by professors Gary Lupyan and Daniel Swignley, the act of using verbal clues to trigger mental pictures helps people function quicker.

(LIST:The 20 Best- and Worst-Paid College Majors)

In one experiment, they showed 20 volunteers pictures of various objects and asked them to find just one of those, a banana. Half were instructed to repeat out loud what they were looking for and the other half kept their lips sealed. Those who talked to themselves…

Are Kids Getting Smarter?

What constitutes intelligence?  I think that’s a question we’ve been asking since the days of the first philosophers.  In the last hundred years or so we came up with a formula for “calculating” intelligence which is an interesting concept since we believe we can solve (or predict) anything through mathematics.

I think we all have to agree that we have a long way to go if it’s even possible to do this.  The global financial collapse we’re witnessing today is a good example of how flawed our mathematical models are today when it comes to “predicting” the natural ebb and flow of the unpredictable tendencies of humans.

However, the test we have for calculating ones intelligence we call the IQ test.  According to this test 2 and 4 year old toddlers are now as smart as the greatest thinking minds of our time.  Tell me what do you think about this?  Are kids really getting smarter or are these tests flawed as well?

Read more about it on Time.
